MRO stand for Maintenance Repair and Overhaul and this industry regroups all the companies that participate to maintain aircrafts in service. Those companies have various different roles in the MRO industry such as part manufacturer (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3), distributor, storage, transport, aircraft repair,… The aerospace industry has been traditionally separated into three main activities which are the aircraft production, operation and the the MRO. Even if the MRO activity is strongly dependent from the two other activities, it is considered as an specific industry.

What are MRO supplies?

MRO supplies can be divided into two categories which are the flying items and the none flying items. All items are identified with a NSN number that allow companies to clearly identify and to procure them.

What is a NSN number?

NSN number comes from NATO Stock Number or National Stock Number which is a 13 digit numeric code that is used by NATO organisations (widely used in the USA). This NSN number is particularly used in the Aerospace and Defense industry to identify spare aircraft parts. Most of the companies in the Aerospace MRO market (Maintenance, Repair and overhaul) will use NSN numbers to search and to identify parts on their online platforms. The NSN number is applied to any item that would be tracked in the federal supply system.

How NSN numbers Work?

The NSN number is composed of 4 digits FSCG (Federal Supply Classification Group) number and a 9 digits NIIN (National Item Number) number. The FSCG number is composed of 2 digits FSC number and a 2 digits FSC number. The NIIN number is composed of a 2 digits NCB number and a 7 digits Item number.
